Broadlees Farm

Simon and Lizzie have farmed the land since 1988 and purchased it in 2008.

Farmer, Simon Phillips owns a 200 acre grassland farm and rents a further 300 acres with wife Elizabeth and daughters Katie and Sophie in Dover. It is very much a family farm and it all started with one tractor and 50 sheep back in 1983. The grassland is used for hay production and grazing the ewe flock.

Sophie, 29 the youngest daughter, has worked on the farm from a young age and after 10 years in the beauty industry last year decided to work full time on the Farm and helps mainly with the livestock.

Katie, 32 is an established Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant in Canterbury with husband Gary and their three year old Max. Lizzie after a career in Community nursing of 25 years assists Simon on the farm and runs the Open Days with daughter Sophie.

The farm is in the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme to conserve and enhance the chalk grassland on the North Downs. One of the objectives of the scheme is to increase the numbers of English Grey partridge and we have seen a significant increase of those numbers in the past 5 years.

We also have an area of the farm which is a “Scene of Special Scientific Interest” on which butterflies and orchids grow. No fertilisers or sprays are applied to these areas and they are farmed to improve their biodiversity. We take our responsibility to look after the countryside very seriously.

Our main business is supplying the equestrian market with high quality conventional, round and big square bales of hay, straw and haylage and we have 300 ewes producing fat lambs marketed throughout the year. We also use our land for events throughout year so please visit Diversification&Events for further information.
