Started in 1779, when the fear of French invasion was high across England, Dover's Western Heights grew to become one of the island nation's largest network of fortifications.

The Western Heights Preservation Society are pleased to be able to invite you to their only public open weekend of 2023 at the Drop Redoubt on Dover's Western Heights on the 24th & 25th June 2023, open 10am to 5pm both days.

The fort is only open to the general public once this year so why not come and visit this unique Napoleonic structure and fortification.

Join us for military re-enactments, musket fire, drills and explore the Napoleonic fort at your leisure. Enjoy cakes and hot and cold drinks in our Casemate cafe and see first hand the restoration work carried out at this amazing site. Explore the tunnels, go down into the casemates, view the cells and the main gunpowder magazine or enjoy the amazing views of Dover, France and the castle from the top.

The Grand Shaft staircase is open, explore the unique triple helix staircase stacked one on top of the other, 140ft down (or up) through the white cliffs of Dover.

Free parking is available at the sports field by the Citadel (follow the signs from Military Hill).

Admission is just £5 per adult allowing unlimited entry both days and children go free. EH members half price entry (special event).

Reminder it's the Western Heights Preservation Society AGM this Friday 10th March 6.45pm at St. Mary’s Parish Hall.

Tracy will be giving a talk on barrack room sanitation and changes in light of the 1858 Hospitals review.

Phil Eyden local historian will be giving a talk on 'The Graves', the mysterious and forgotten graveyard of the Heights.
